ST. LOUIS — It has been a long two years since the Ted Drewes Frozen Custard stand on Grand Boulevard has sold a sundae with caramel sauce, a Cardinal Sin or even a simple concrete with crushed Dad’s Original Scotch Oatmeal Cookies and butterscotch sauce.
The stand, at 4224 South Grand Boulevard, reopens Friday. It had been closed first because of COVID and then because of staffing problems since 2020, except for a brief period of a month or more in 2021.
In a Facebook post, the company wrote, “Thank you all for being patient with us in the last few seasons as we worked through the pandemic and staffing issues. If ever there was a sign that the world is ‘getting back to normal,’ this is it!”
The South Grand location, in Dutchtown, was first opened in 1931, but it is not the original store. Ted Drewes Sr. opened his first frozen custard stand in Florida in 1929 and then opened one in St. Louis on Natural Bridge Road in 1930. Both of those have since closed.

The location at 6726 Chippewa Street in St. Louis Hills opened in 1941. It has stayed open, except for two months at the beginning of the pandemic.
The South Grand location will be open 2-10 p.m. every day throughout the summer. The Chippewa Street location opens at 11 a.m. and is open year-round except January and early February.
